A night of mystery and enchantment! Happy Halloween!
I can't decide if I like it better in color or black & white...

For those of us who love Jane Austen, stories of Mr. Darcy will never grow old. My new favorite movie: Lost in Austen.  It's about a 20th Century woman who walks into the story of Pride & Prejudice as it's happening and tries to make the story work out the way it's "supposed to."  Not to give away the ending of the story, but...

What woman doesn't want to kiss Mr. Darcy?!

On the way down the driveway this foggy morning, I saw a perfect spider web in the rosebush, glittering with crystals of dew along every strand.

I've spent the past two days in the back storage shed, filing away old charts.  After I swept the spider webs and dirt out, of course. My co-worker brought out the poster of the happy lady in the sunglasses for me so I wouldn't be lonely.

I've been meaning to take today's photo for some time now, so I was finally able to snap the shot.  This rusty Ford tractor has been sitting silently and hopelessly for years, discarded like a useless Three of Clubs in a hand full of Hearts.  Missing a headlight, it looks lazily at the ivy covered wall with one eye.  The wooden six foot fence closed the door on the Ford from ever escaping the back lot to mow lawn again.  It sits, resigned to only memories of past employment, now disregarded with flat rubber tires, cracked and weathered, and mocked by the weeds.

Is the glass half empty or half full?  If there's water in it, it should be half empty, because you should be drinking it.  With a name like Living Water Arts, I sure don't tout water as much as I should.  It's been said we should drink at least as many ounces of water per day as half our body weight in pounds.  So, a 120 lb. person should be drinking at least 60 oz. of water per day.  It not only hydrates, but flushes our cells of toxins.  Drink more pure water (not coffee).

This evening after getting home from work, I sat down at the newly tuned piano, picked up a stack of sheet music from the floor, and rested my eyes on the top sheet: Pachelbel's Cannon in D.  My favorite song.  Ever.  After roughly playing through all six pages, I leaned back in my seat and sighed deeply.  It was a moment of sheer serenity and peace!  As a result, I've decided to memorize that song on the piano.

This evening, I had the opportunity to hear Australian Samantha Gash tell about the amazing ultra marathons she's completed in the past two years!  Just a few months ago she ran a 220km, 60 hour marathon up to 18,000ft in the Himalayas.  She could have completed the Warrior Dash with her eyes closed.  Hmm... inspiration?  Check out her website:

Having someone hold me accountable, I've begun to memorize a Bible verse every day that reflects my values.  Today's verse is in line with my value of integrity (my definition: someone who is true from the inside out, sincere and real, strong and trustworthy): Proverbs 22:11.

I have a feeling this isn't going to be the only autumn leaf photo this fall.  What a perfect day to be a red leaf!

Huh. I just realized that I edited and saved the following photo yesterday, but inadvertently didn't post it like I thought I did... hmm.  Yesterday, a bunch of friends got together for brunch to celebrate my roommate's birthday at a lovely, classy restaurant in downtown Portland called Meriwether's.  They have a farm where they grow their own food for the restaurant! And besides the coconut chicken waffles, to-die-for lemon curd, and fried homegrown potato wedges, there was play dough.  We made birthday cakes for Tarah.

I had the entire day to myself today to not accomplish all that I meant to do.  It was, however, a productive and yet relaxing day.  I dug into the recesses of the cupboards and back of the fridge to make a cozy autumn soup worthy of gracing someone's grandma's recipe card.  I am determined to master soup this winter.  This one was good, but not it.  Peach salsa with lentil chips on the other hand-- fabulous!  Here is proof I did something today:

Night of the pumpkin lobotomies! This terrifying pumpkin monster ate all of the others.  It is not my creation and I take no responsibility for it's horror. But it's awesome!

Ah, the day when your firefighter roommate sends you a text saying, We are oven/stoveless until Monday and thank God the house hasn't burned down.  Melted wiring in the wall.  We knew there was a reason the oven has been working on and off all summer...

This morning I placed a thawed chicken into the crock pot (which I had to dig out from the back of the cupboard), plucked some fresh sage and rosemary from the damp garden, and propped the lady bird together in a Martha Stewart way, minus the twine around the legs.  It was meant to be a "new friends" offering to the pastor's family tonight, but they had to cancel because their kiddos had strep.  Martha Stewart Chicken was then offered to the next two bodies who were willing and able to join the impromptu fall feast, including golden squash, herb salad, and blueberry cobbler (after a rush to the grocery store for vanilla ice cream).

Around day 50ish, I found myself wondering what in the world I would take photos of if nothing out of the ordinary happened that day.  Now at day 283, I'm finding myself wondering how many photos of sushi, dinner, Duncan, tea bag quotes, etc. I should post.  And then I try to put just a little different twist on one of them and I become pleasantly surprised.  I love this mug and this quote:

Beautiful, soft, fresh peaches!  There's nothing quite like going to a local farmer's market to buy fresh produce, but something similar is going to the local Trader Joe's.

I went on a new adventure this evening with a friend to an Asian grocery store-- mega grocery store! Where I couldn't read the labels on, really, anything! Fun times! My treasures:

Oh, yes.  I bought the things I could read the ingredients on.

You know that it's finally autumn when you step out of the house in the morning and there's a different kind of chill in the air, a shift in the weather's personality; an immediate thought that slaps your mind and says, something's changed.  That was today.  When I left work tonight and put the key into the car door lock, I looked down to puddle in the asphalt where a red leaf smiled up at me.  Then, when I let my long haired dog into the house tonight, I practically had to give him a bath to get the mud out of his fur.  It's started.  And not everyone is happy about it...

Tarah and I took a "daycation" (her word) today to the coast.  We went into a working lighthouse, spent time on the beach doing a photoshoot, ate fresh seafood, and walked under the sharks in the Oregon Coast Aquarium.  One of my favorite shots of the day:

The First Day of October, 2011
The beginning of the rains ushered in October today. I wrote the following Bible verse down in my journal this morning: "Rejoice in the Lord your God! For the rains he sends are an expression of his grace.  Once more the autumn rains will come, as well as the rains of spring." Joel 2:26  So embrace the rain! God sends the rain.
